Nestled in the midst of the urban Mesa area, Gilbert is sandwiched between the Route 60 freeway to the north and the Highway 202 loop to the south. Founded on July 6, 1981 as a rail stop for the Arizona Eastern Railway, the town received its name from William Gilbert, the owner of the rail stop’s land. With a population steadily growing past 208,000 people, Gilbert is one of the largest communities still classified as a town rather than as a city. Interestingly, Gilbert is the center of Arizona’s population, meaning that it is the most central point to all residents of the state.

Gilbert is ideally located close to several amenities that residents have come to treasure. The convenience of being near important destinations adds to the value of owning a property in Gilbert. A commuter bus service operates shuttles into Phoenix from Gilbert’s park-and-ride facility. Additionally, both the Phoenix Mesa Gateway Airport and the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport are both within a short twenty-five minute drive. For shoppers, there are three major malls nearby, offering everything from small coffee shops to large national retailers. Mesa South Center, Santa Fe Square Shopping Center, and Mesa Shores Shopping Center are the most popular local centers. Residents can also choose to drive further into Mesa should their immediate needs not be met nearby.

For outdoors recreationists and people looking to exercise outside, there are several options, including Freestone Park, Water Park, Crossroads Park, and Folley Park. The area’s golf courses are quite popular and usually populated quite heavily by the area’s golf enthusiasts. Greenfield Lakes Golf Course and Western Skies Golf Course are both located on prime local real estate.

The majority of Gilbert students attend school in the Gilbert Unified School District, although some small parts of the town are actually served by Chandler Unified School District, Mesa Public Schools, the Queen Creek Unified School District, and the Higley Unified School District. The local school system is comprised of twenty-eight elementary schools, six junior high schools, and five high schools. Campo Verde High School, completed in 2009 was the most recently built campus and today serves as the flagship of the school system in Gilbert.
