Surprise Real Estate Information

The 100,000-person city of Surprise is one of Maricopa County’s fastest growing cities, growing by 100% since 2001. In fact, Surprise is actually the second-fastest growing municipality in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area. Founded in 1938, the city is named after a similarly-titled city in Nebraska which was the hometown of the area’s founder. It wasn’t until 1960 that Surprise was actually incorporated.

Sun City Grand, an age-restricted community on the edge of Surprise, is one of the area’s largest draws and accounts for a substantial portion of the local population. This more senior crowd enjoys the comfortable and safe living afforded by the communities of Surprise and the greater Phoenix area. Construction is currently underway on a new regional shopping center that is designed to become the commerce hub for the region at a cost in excess of a quarter million dollars. Planners hope that the mall not only will cater to current residents’ needs but also provide a sound foundation for future expansion and growth.

Surprise has an interesting sports community that avidly supports a very dynamic and ever-changing sports culture. Surprise serves as the spring training home of the Kansas City Royals and the Texas Rangers, both Major League Baseball teams. Both teams use the Surprise Stadium for their activities. When the major league teams aren’t in town, Surprise baseball fans can watch Golden Baseball League teams play at the stadium. Enthusiastic recreationists can take advantage of the city’s Recreation Campus as well as the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex. Both facilities offer exceptional user experiences and are quite heavily used throughout the day most days out of the year. Both venues are well equipped to handle the needs of large groups, families, and other typical park users. Several smaller neighborhood parks are also popular amongst residents who like to go on short walks.

While Surprise is relatively small compared to other area cities, it surprisingly has its own police department that has four major divisions. This well-trained force has helped in keeping the crime rate in Surprise low and maintaining a safe environment for residents of all ages.
