Tempe is home to about 175,000 people in the heart of Arizona. Name after the Vale of Tempe in Greece, the city is situated in the East Valley portion of the Phoenix metropolitan area and is largely centered around industry and collegiate life. As one of the state’s primary cities, Tempe serves not only as an essential place of commerce but an important living and residential area. Because Phoenix is not too far away, there are many commuters who choose to live in Tempe and drive to downtown Phoenix for work during the week.

Arizona State University, one of the largest public universities in the United States, enrolls over 65,000 students at its Tempe campus. Just eight miles east of downtown Phoenix, the urban campus spans 642 acres and is arranged around broad pedestrian malls. The large student population attracted to ASU makes Tempe alive with a youthful vibe and spirit. The young student base also makes for a very interesting night scene.

US Airways’ world headquarters are located in the middle of Tempe. As the sixth largest airline in the nation, US Airways operates a fleet of over 600 aircraft to destinations around the world. One of its three hubs is located at the nearby Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. A large portion of the company’s over 34,000 employees work at the main airline campus in Tempe making US Airways one of the city’s largest employers. Other Fortune 500 companies based in Tempe include Insight Enterprises, Limelight Networks, LifeLock, Fulton Homes and Mobile Mini.

One of the city’s largest annual events is the Insight Fiesta Bowl Block Party, one of the United States’ largest New Year’s Eve parties. The event is in preparation for the Insight Bowl that is played in Tempe as well as the Fiesta Bowl in nearby Glendale. Arizona Mills, one of the state’s largest shopping malls, has an IKEA as well as several other big box retailers. Mill Avenue is a shopping strip and entertainment venue that is popular with pedestrians, especially students.
